PTFE Compounds

PTFE is a comparatively soft thermoplastic with some excellent properties like chemical inertness, high using temperature and low coefficient of friction. By adding fillers properties like hardness, resistance to wear and deformation, electrical and thermal conductivity can be changed.

UPM’s compound division produces over a hundred types of compound ranging in quantity from a few kilograms to a few tons annually.

The matrix material for our compound is only purchased from well known PTFE suppliers who are certificated and approved from all over the world, for instance : DuPont, AGC, GFL. Our policy is to buy and sell excellent quality materials at appropriate prices.  PTFE and filler prices can vary, we therefore always update our prices on a regular basis.

Filler percentage can vary from 0,1 to 75%. Fillers must be suitable for using in a PTFE compound:  withstand the prolonged sintering temperature of PTFE of 370oC, non hygroscopic. Filler types are for example:  pigments, glass fibers, bronze, graphite, carbon, molybdenum disulphide, stainless steel. All fillers can be used in single form or in combination.

Almost every compound can be made out of three different forms:

NFF (Non Free Flow)
This powder shape is used for handfilling of moulds with considerable wall thickness. If compared with Free Flow or Extrusion grades with the same composition, the properties of a NFF are better.
Billets from 0,1 to 360kg can be made.

FF (Free Flow)
Used for hand filling or automatic moulding. The advantage over Non Free Flow is that the (thin wall) mould will be filled easier, but it should be noted that a NFF with the same composition has better values.

E (Extrusion grade)
Not suitable for free sintering, only suitable for ram extrusion. Extrusion grades can be made in all different types of compositions.
